When a pipe bursts at 2am you don’t want a voicemail menu. You want someone who picks up.
Between 7am and 7pm the phone rings to Nigel directly or to one of our engineers. Outside those hours, your call goes through a triage line (a real human, not a chatbot) that wakes the on-call engineer for genuine emergencies and books a 7am callback for everything else.
You’ll never wake up wondering if you got through to anyone. You’ll always get a same-day human reply.
What counts as an emergency
We treat these as emergencies and respond within 60 minutes inside Cardiff:
- Suspected gas leak: call us first, then turn the gas off at the meter. If you can smell gas strongly, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before us.
- No heat in winter: failed boiler, no hot water in a household with kids, elderly residents, or vulnerable people. Don’t sit it out in November–March.
- Burst pipes / major leaks: water actively coming through ceilings, flooding floors, escaping through a wall, soaking electrics.
- Sewage backups: anything coming back up where it shouldn’t.
- Active electrical danger: burning smell from a socket, sparks, water and electrics in contact.
What we’ll need from you on the call
We’ll triage in about 90 seconds. Have these ready if you can:
- Postcode and house number: confirms travel time and we can route the engineer while you talk to Nigel.
- What’s actually happening: water, gas, no heat, electrical. Be specific: “water through the kitchen ceiling” rather than “leak”.
- What you’ve already turned off: stopcock, gas at the meter, RCD at the consumer unit. We can talk you through these if you don’t know where they are.
- Anyone vulnerable in the house: that bumps you up the priority list.
What it costs
Standard out-of-hours rate is £150 for the first hour (covers the callout, diagnosis and most fixes), £85 per hour after that. Materials at trade plus 15%. Bank holiday rate is £180 for the first hour.
For genuinely-urgent cases involving vulnerable residents (elderly, kids, anyone medically fragile), we’ll discuss the rate before we set off. We’ve never not turned up because of money on a winter no-heat job.
Most one-room emergencies (a single burst pipe, a single failed valve, a tripped consumer unit) are fully resolved on the first visit. Anything needing ordered parts gets a temporary make-safe so your home is liveable until we’re back.
When it’s not an emergency
We won’t pretend everything is. A few things we’ll cheerfully tell you can wait until 7am:
- Lost boiler pressure overnight: re-pressurise via the filling loop (target 1.0–1.5 bar cold), set a callback for the morning. Unless there are vulnerable residents in the house and it’s mid-winter, this isn’t a 2am job.
- A dripping tap: annoying, not urgent. Turn the isolator off if it’s bad and we’ll book you in tomorrow.
- A radiator that’s gone cold: bleed the air, see if a single rad has gone cold while others are working. Almost always a balancing issue, not an emergency.
We’ll be honest with you on the call about what counts and what doesn’t. You’re not paying out-of-hours rates for something that can wait six hours.
