Cardiff hard water and what it does to your pipes and boiler

Cardiff and the Vale sit in a moderately-hard water zone: typically 180–220 mg/l of calcium carbonate. That’s softer than London but harder than Glasgow. Here’s what it actually does to your pipework, and what’s worth fitting versus what’s snake oil.

What limescale is, and where it forms

Limescale is calcium carbonate that drops out of solution when water is heated above 60°C. So it forms in:

• The kettle (the obvious one)
• The hot water cylinder: especially the immersion-heater element
• The combi boiler heat exchanger: the part that fails first
• Hot taps and shower heads: visible white build-up
• The aerator on every tap: clogs flow within 18 months

Cold-water pipework is largely unaffected. The damage is concentrated in the hot side.

What it actually costs you

Limescale on a heat exchanger reduces efficiency by roughly 3–5% per year if left untreated. After 7–8 years, a combi boiler with no protection can be running at 75% efficiency or below versus its 92%+ rated. That’s an extra £150–£250 a year in gas, plus a heat exchanger that’s now likely to fail.

A clogged shower aerator costs you nothing but irritation. A scaled hot-water cylinder with the immersion fully calcified is roughly £180 to descale if caught in time, or £420 to replace the immersion if you wait.

What works (and what doesn’t)

There are roughly four categories of limescale prevention. We’ve installed all of them. Here’s our honest take:

Magnetic system filters (MagnaClean Professional 3 or equivalent), £120 fitted

Worth it for every install. Catches magnetite (the black sludge that forms in heating systems) before it reaches the heat exchanger. We fit one on every boiler we install. Non-negotiable. It doesn’t help with limescale specifically, but it’s the cheapest way to protect a £2,000 boiler.

Inline scale inhibitor cartridges (Boiler Buddy, Combimate), £180 fitted

Worth it in Cardiff. Replaceable cartridge fitted to the cold inlet of the boiler, releases polyphosphate to stop calcium dropping out. Lasts 6 months. We recommend it on every combi install in CF23, CF14, CF15, which are the harder zones. Less critical in CF10 and CF24.

Whole-house water softeners (Harvey, Kinetico, BWT), £900–£1,800 fitted

Worth it for households with high water usage. A salt-based ion-exchange softener removes calcium and magnesium from all water entering the home. Pays back in 3–4 years on a busy household: saves on detergent, reduces heating bills, extends boiler life. Doesn’t pay back on single-occupancy homes or holiday lets.

The two we fit and trust:

• Harvey HV3: twin-cylinder, no electricity needed, lasts 25+ years
• Kinetico Premier Compact: quieter, cheaper, slightly less efficient

We don’t recommend electric softeners (BWT AQA Perla, etc.), as they’re more expensive and the ion-exchange resin needs replacing every 8–10 years.

Magnetic / electronic descalers (£40–£200), the snake oil category

These devices clip around your incoming pipe and claim to “reorganise the calcium ions” so they don’t deposit. There’s no peer-reviewed evidence they work. We get called out routinely to homes with these fitted to find limescale build-up identical to homes without them. Don’t buy them.

What we’d actually fit on a typical Cardiff boiler install

For a 3-bed Cardiff semi, two adults, one school-age child:

• MagnaClean Professional 3: always (£120 in the install)
• Combimate scale inhibitor: yes, on most CF14 / CF23 / CF15 installs
• Whole-house softener: only if the customer is interested. Pays back on this household profile but not essential.

The total scale-protection investment over the life of a 12-year boiler is roughly £350. The avoided cost (replacement heat exchanger, immersion replacement, tap descaling, etc.) is roughly £900–£1,400. Solid return.

What about taps and showers?

For taps, we descale the aerator as part of every annual service we do: soak the aerator nose in vinegar for 20 minutes, brush, refit. Takes 3 minutes per tap. For shower heads, we either descale or replace if the holes are too clogged.

If you’re noticing scale on your taps and shower regularly, the underlying issue is probably the hot-water side, and fitting a softener fixes the symptom and the cause.

When to ask us about it

You don’t need to do anything special. We always quote scale protection on every boiler install. No commission on softeners, so the recommendation is purely on what’ll suit you.
